I know icicles are supposed to be bad, because they are evidence of heat leaks in your house, but I'm enjoying these ones out the kitchen window...

Here is another sparkly thing for your consideration:

Soooo fuzzy.....

This may not be the only post like this. Just a warning.

loveliness 36

Today, walking up Euclid Ave., around 5:45pm, I smelled a most wonderful smell. Someone was making tomato sauce, I think.

I am currently enjoying a very satisfying relationship with the Toronto Public Library.

(Thanks to Wikipedia for this image, and also for choosing the Parkdale branch as the TPL prototype)

I order books, and the nice recorded voice lady calls me. Today she had several thrilling titles for me, including but not limited to: "Insulate and Weatherize," "Quick Guide Insulation and Ventilation," and "No-Fear Home Improvement: 100 projects anyone can do." Hmm. We'll see.

Last week I took a chance on one of their "best bets." It is only a seven-day loan, so you have to be kind-of committed. Well, my mom takes out about a dozen best bets at a time with no problem. But I don't read much, so....

Anyway, it was Douglas Coupland's "The Gum Thief" which was pretty much content-free so it wasn't too hard to finish in a week. Well, I read like half of it today (the day it was due). I did notice though that he has made a series of videos (ads, maybe?) about/for the book. In fact, I recommend the movie over the book in this case.

Monday = Drawing day

Can I do this? One drawing a week? It doesn't even have to be good (witness: below).

Here is something I didn't know until today. You can watch the provincial legislature in action, live! I am finding this surprisingly entertaining, although I'm sure it won't last, being basically self-interested in nature.

I am also feeling some warm fuzzies for the Ontario NDP. They are getting butchered in the press right now for it however. Interestingly the conservatives have also been making a bit of sense in there, citing the chronic underfunding of Ontario universities as the real stumbling block in this labour dispute. Ontario is the tenth province (out of... ten provinces) in terms of per-capita funding for post-secondary education.

This is a kind of good-bad loveliness...

To atone: evidence of tasty-lunch-loveliness

I think back-to-work legislation is shit. But, one lovely thing to come of it, is that I won't have to be cold, at least professionally cold, hopefully for a long time (maybe I'll be cold on Tuesday though....).

The rally today outside Queen's park:

This is my hand being very cold.

We tried to warm up in Hart House. Looks cozy, no? Still cold.

Moved on to Big Fat Burrito in Kensington,  which was steamy with the heat of deliciousness:

Anticipating the mmm-mmm/thawing limbs.
Warmth didn't really start happening until I put a wonderful wonderful sweet yam burrito in my tummy.

Someone was waiting with stern looks when we arrived home.

Today Patrick showed me a house that isn't on any street. Well, the address is 15 A Grove Ave, but it is alley-only access. The alleys in Toronto are a strange and mysterious maze, not nearly so systematic as those in Vancouver. But there is a lot to be found there, if you go looking.  Including houses apparently, which you would think are too big to be lost.

ps. It is Saturday, and the sun is out!

I am really really enjoying this mixtape from everyone's favorite Edmonton born rapper Cadence Weapon ("I wear pink unironically I wave my big fist at my friend androgyny").
Pay what you can (or will) all you lovers of loveliness....

And this, well, this is apparently totally legit mathematics.

Loveliness 28

When I first thought about starting this blog, it was this loveliness that I imagined as Loveliness #0, the first and original loveliness. So it has taken 28 days to get to this, but in my mind and tummy it is no less awesome. Ladies, Gentlemen and all humans:

PORRIDGE.

(not a particularly flattering picture)

Yes, I love it and I am addicted.
I am going to share my recipe for my favorite morning meal.

INGREDIENTS
just less than 1/2 cup Large Flake Oats (not quick oats)
enough Red river cereal to make just over 1/2 cup dried cereal
1 and a bit cups of water
pinch of salt
1/2 apple, chopped
raisins, if you like them, and I do
large pinch cinnamon
small pinch nutmeg

DO THIS NOW
Bring the water and the salt to a boil, add the cereal. Cook for 5 - 10 minutes, until most of the water is absorbed. Add the apple, raisins and spices, and cook some more. Maybe put a lid on and turn the heat right down, if you want to soften the apple a bit. When it has reached the desired consistency, remove it from the heat, cover, and let it stand for a minute or two (that way you won't burn your tongue!)

EAT IT
Serve topped with hemp seeds or ground flax, nuts, a bit of brown sugar and almond milk for an ultimate hippie treat.

MMMMMMMMM
This makes quite a bit of porridge for one person, but I'm a champ and have no problem consuming all of it.

There are lots of great things to say today. For one thing, the results of the forced ratification are in, with three lovely results:

Unit 1 voted no
Unit 2 voted no
Unit 3 voted no

YAY for us voting no-no-no to shitty deals! I'm still worried about the next few days, weeks and months, but I'm also hopeful. Maybe it has something to do with what seems like a rather auspicious day.

There were also a lot of new and/or unusual experiences for me today:
- figuring out how to make an annotated bibliography in LaTeX
- listening to a whole presidential inauguration speech
- being moved to tears while listening to the radio (ok, it has happened before, but is infrequent enough to merit a mention)
- going to North York Centre station! I love visiting new TTC stations
- voting in a Ministry of Labour supervised vote
- taking a TTC shuttle bus between Sheppard and Lawrence due to "a track-level injury" at York Mills station. In all my twenty eight years of TTC riding I have never had to take a shuttle bus.
- Tuesday ballet!
- en dedan pique turns! I can do them now, at least most of the way!

YAY YAY YAY!

Emails containing photos of plants growing in far away places (ok, kitchener). This totally made my evening. Check out this insane pea plant:

Yes, I am full of warm fuzzies from the efforts of my (grad student) colleagues in the math department who have taken the time to write considered and thoughtful messages to the list. This has been the worst week of the strike for me (what with things like thisthis and this), but my spirits are buoyed by the actions of these friends -- hurray for people caring about shit. That is loveliness 25.

Well here it is, the Price Chopper. I really do love this place, I don't know why, since it is pretty shitty really. It isn't nearly as nice as say, Multiple Organics, which is actually a great little shop. But something keeps me coming back to the Chopper....

I especially enjoy this WALKWAY provided for us and the bundlor.

loveliness 22

So now that I'm full up with warm warm porridge, I can post loveliness 22. This is one that I have been meaning to write about for a while now:

Other People's Resolutions.

A sample from my growing collection:
- be less honest, more nice
- it is better to call than not call (somewhat ill-formed as a resolution, but still good, I think)
- it is better to visit, than not visit (same)
- learn Ojibway (wow M+D!)
- write down a list of 20 things you want to do, and then do them
- make a blog that you publish to every day (what loser made that reso...)
- go basically vegan
- eat less sugar
- don't buy a single article of clothing for a year! (I keep alluding to this, it will be the topic of a separate post)
- get shit done/waste less time.

I also like all the extra people at the gym. Go everyone!!!

loveliness 23

OK, loveliness 22 gets preempted by this, loveliness 23, which is ELECTRICITY! Never have I been so happy to have power back on after a blackout

It was only ten hours, but at -30 degrees C, it was very noticeable. Especially after our energy audit revealed that our house is effectively a sieve. But flannel sheets + Belle Vallee wool blanket (those Northern Ontario sheep know about cold) + Duvet + Roxy  was a pretty good defense.

ps. I just learned how to make linkz, did you notice? Also commenting is now new and improved, so you can make me feel less lame by leaving a comment.

Flannel sheets on a c-c-c-cold night.

(I heard someone today describing the cold weather. She said something to the effect of "minus 15 plus the windchill." She then corrected herself: "well, minus the windchill." It was kind of awesome. )

loveliness 19

This is a little before and after.
BEFORE:

AFTER:

So what exactly are you looking at? Well, this is my handkerchief situation. Yes, I love handkerchiefs (handkerchieves?), but I have noticed that while it is very easy to find nice men's handkerchiefs, it is almost impossible to find women's handkerchiefs at all. Of course, this is one area where it almost certainly doesn't matter, but I love all that lacy flowery shit, and my Honest Ed's BEFORE stack wasn't cutting it. So imagine my delight when I chanced on these beauties care of the mennonites at the St. Jacob's market this weekend. Yeah, they know all about flowery women stuff, as evidenced by some the fabric I picked up there for the quilt (topic of a different post, at a different time...).  And not only that, but I was choosing from quite a vast selection of women's hankies. Yay mennos. This is my last post about the menno stuff, I promise. And, I did think about whether or not the three hankies would be in violation of the clothing diet (also subject of a different post) but I concluded that they were really more of a toiletry item than a fashion item. The good fash is just a bonus.

loveliness 18

Today was one of those too-bright sneezy snowy days.  We took a 7K walk to the mall in a place where no one walks (Kitchener). It was simultaneously lovely and frustrating.  Why is it that roads are plowed so that cars can get around, but that sidewalks aren't? This is so simple. OK, this blog is only supposed to be about nice stuff and I'm complaining, but it just boggles my mind!  I can say that the St. Aloysius area (around the Church and school) was very well cleared of snow. Thanks guys.

To make up for the complaining above (loveliness demerits), I will mention another loveliness... (perhaps 0.5 of one?) Taking the greyhound bus back from Kitchener via Guelph. That really was nice, passing the old Neeve Street house and seeing the city from the coziness of the bus.

11:59 p-pow!

loveliness 17

Dear Diary,

Today we went to St. Jacob's farmers market. I'm told that some of the mennonites bring their warez to market on horse and buggy. We did not go by horse and buggy.

It was basically a good old time, involving looking at menno quilts,  looking at menno sausage, looking at the always mysterious menno donut machine, and (lining up for then) eating apple fritters. Mmmm hmmm....

It also involved buying a rabbit!!! No, not as a pet, but to eat!

Patrick bravely dejointed the beast.

Well, it doesn't look good, but I am currently smelling one of the most delicious smells in my whole smell memory.  Mmmm... rabbit ragu.... NOM NOM NOM when will you be ready?

"I ride the greyhound bus, I ride it everywhere" -- The Moldy Peaches
Yes, it's true... I love the greyhound bus. I guess it is because I am lucky enough not to take it too often, but there is something about it that I really like. It reminds me of many hours I spent traveling between Guelph and Toronto, usually asleep, with that weird ticking sound of the windows... And of course, the greyhound bus is at its loveliest when your sweetheart is at the other end.

Also: I am currently experiencing the loveliness of hot cocoa with almond liqueur...  how did I not know about this before?

Be it resolved that.....

This photo doesn't quite capture the orangey, coral-y salmon-y awesomeness of tonight's voting card. But it was a beautiful show of colour when we deemed the employer's latest offer to be inadequate, and voted to send the bargaining team back to the table with the full rah-rah support of the membership. Go team.

Two weeks of loveliness!

Today is all about having friends who, when eating soup at Tim Horton's, are paying enough attention to detail to notice a piece of (probably rehydrated dehydrated) corn that actually looks a lot like a lego head:

And for saving it!

Here is a zoom out:

loveliness 13

I'm not sure that 'lovely' is exactly the right word to describe the home energy audit we had today, but I'll go with it anyway. Basically some guy came to the house and attached a giant fan to the door, which sucks all the air through the house and makes you realize just how poorly sealed the whole mess really is. Before he did it he told us to put away our toothbrushes, otherwise they'd be covered in dust. It was a good old time.

It is true that the matching between the stained glass and the door cover thing was lovely. There!

Loveliness 12

Getting up early is lovely. For one thing, you maximize daylight, but it is also a nice feeling to have the whole day stretching out ahead of you. Coffee helps, of course. Today will be a day of super-efficiency.... yes!

loveliness 11

O! How I love garbage. Check out this piece of craziness that I found at College and Ossington earlier today:

Yeah, it is a weird squat little throne that has a rocking action. It seems appropriate since I recently bought a book called "Upholstery Basics" for $4.99. Hopefully it'll tell me everything I need to know.
We ripped out all of the very old fabric etc., the "etc." being straw, springs, burlap and smells. Check this out:

Yeah... I'm itchy from all the straw and weirdness in there.

Still, I'm excited to get some nice fabric and reupholster that guy.

Look at this beautiful knit scarf made for me by pingram... I'm a lucky lady.

loveliness 8, a day late

So yes, it looks like I missed a day, but the internet was busted over here.

Yesterday's loveliness was French. We went to see "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime," and it reminded me how nice everything French is.
