Short meetings that are actually short.

Here are three funny things about the Courtyard Mariott Worcester (courtyard = gravel pit, btw). This flavour of art was everywhere:
I love that even hotel shampoo and conditioner appears to be jumping on the alterna-grains/wheat-free bandwagon!!!
This reminds me of the Poppery II. What happened to the Cafe Valet I, and the Poppery I?
And now, on to loveliness.... check out this very sweet note about how to operate the bed side globe lamp in the guest room that I slept in last night (not at the Courtyard Mariott, needless to say):

loveliness 124

Getting home is so nice. And there are big beautiful flowers on the table that I didn't put there!

This is the craziest thing. It is an overhead slide that depicts a photograph of a model of some geometric object. The layers of representation! They are wonderful! (So are stealth in-talk photos from my phone).

I have been listening to K'naan's Toubadour like constantly. Prolly when I go to give my talk in Worcester, I'll open my mouth and this'll come out instead of math. But seriously. Check it out...

When trips up to York are cancelled. Three whole bonus hours!

Spring springs! Yesterday's crazy-rain means things are growing and greening. The Saskatoon Berry Bush furrs forward.
Roxy: whiff-catcher.

loveliness 116

- Blustery bike rides!
- Star Magnolia in bloom (spring delightfully slow -- 400 times the normal amount of maple syrup, says Sara, the maple syrup authority)!
- phone calls from Europe!
- delicious dinner parties!
- Impromptu piano recitals!

But you know, I have been feeling remorse about yesterday's loveliness. It WAS lovely, that is true, but really its loveliness was eclipsed by the awesomeness of yesterday's sister time -- punk rock hair-robics (I'm sore, are you?) and then Gayley's for brunch. Still later a good old fashioned ABBA dance party. WICKED. So swap out loveliness 116 and 115, ok?

loveliness 115

Really a tremendous amount of loveliness all around these days. But this is just a little thing that made me so super happy. I opened up my math palette which is a collection of all of my favourite colours for making math pictures (like the one in loveliness 114), and I noticed that it is all of the same colours as my quilt!
This should come as no surprise, I suppose, since these are just all of my favourite colours, but since I have been doubtful about my quilt colour choices lately, this makes me feel happeeee!

Now, a bonus for my LaTeX friends who want some shortcuts.... Jus' drop dis in de preamble:

Bumping into ray-of-sunshine-esque old friends at York of all places!

OK, hot on the heels of the Beamer post, I really need to talk about TikZ.  This is a wicked recursive acronym which stands for TikZ ist kein Zeichenprogramm, meaning TikZ is not a drawing program. But TikZ is so much more... check out these examples to see how the pros use it.

I made this thing:
And then this thing:
TikZ also farted out a couple of lovely mistakes in the process. For example:
Oh, and I am SO proud of my pingman....

And she walks again! Outings (for Mom)! Family dinners (missing G+M)! Very special Quebec cheeses! (currently enjoying again... smells like loveliness 113)

Check out this sweetness that I'm whipping up for my upcoming trip to Worcester:

This is really P's marking loveliness (and those are so few and far between) but it made me laugh (out loud, axshully):

loveliness 110

Today the Math Lab was lovely. Usually I just coordinate the TAs and do other swishy administrative things like posting sign-up sheets. But today I was actually tutoring for a change, and it reminded me that tutoring can be fun and that math is funn. Especially easy math.

loveliness 109

I have had this book, Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe, on my shelf for years, but I've never read it. Happily he has hosted this three hour PBS special on string theory so that now I don't have to.  It is actually pretty good, in a dorky, prime-time high-budget science-special kind of way.

7:15 am, sunny and so quiet.
A surprising pre-coffee alertness.
Waking up, and being awake. Sweet, wonderful Saturday morning...
(Photo inspiration here)

loveliness 107

Since I spent most of the day (yesterday) scratching away at math I think it is only appropriate to describe my current pencil situation. I love love love this pencil:It looks like a regular pencil made giant... it is big and light and smells like a regular pencil (take that smencils!).
But its mechanical! It scratches in a delightful fashion!
Thanks Mom for sharing your fancy stationary.

loveliness 106

All day I have been enjoying the loveliest offerings from the loveliest dinner guests... now even my house is a house full of flowers (and last night, the most wonderfully spongiest lemon cupcakes).  My current hypothesis is that flowers inspire mathematics, not Eggies, as I had previously conjectured (that is still worth a try though, now and again and again).

Orange bench, orange phone and now, orange tulips!
and: O! Fuzziness!
Plus the net pointed out that we are nearing the ten year friendiversarry... now there is something. This really deserves its own dedicated post, and shouldn't be tacked on here... so consider this a preview.

loveliness 105

I haven't said much about the shopping diet, because in some ways there isn't much to say (not-doing something doesn't inspire a lot of words in this case). I'll flesh out the details in another post, but suffice it to say that it makes buying a new sports bra very exciting.

Plus, I'm going to look like a superhero while working out:
The metallic detail is pretty... necessary.

(moosh alert!)

mmm boyfriend sweaters. Especially while said boyfriend is away on business trips.

loveliness 103

Well, who really likes snow in April? "What a rip-off," said P. But those big graceful flakes billowing around were kind of pretty. Plus it gave me another opportunity to enjoy the coziness of my big puffy down coat.... a residue of strike fash. In truth I haven't thought much about the strike since it ended, but the wet, cold, crummie weather today brought me right back, and all I'm saying now is man I'm so glad it's over.

Red winged blackbirds are my favourite birds. Especially in the city, but especially anywhere.
Thanks to Friend of Birds for the photo

Dad's care packages.... (last night: apples, pears, red fife pasta. Other times: cheese and leftovers)

Mom's amusement/enjoyment at Dad's care package assembly...

loveliness 100

Yay! I'm calling this a birthday. The day feels celebratory, anyway, and celebratory means chocolate today. So chocolate for two (in ramekins!!)
and funnie plant
and delightful felt-marker math
and rain at times heavy.
Lovely day, and loveliness to all! xoxox

First bike ride of the season!!!  Riding down Gladstone (home from Bathurst Cycle) coat a-flapping,  the wind in my face carrying the smell of Cadbury's Caramilk secret (and then later, Crunchie).
Patrick! My bike saw your bike and fell in love! Look at happy they are together!!

loveliness 98

So much loveliness today.... (oh, today = yesterday = Wednesday).  Artists met scientists for speedier dating and it was awesome (which button would you pick?). Time-restricted collaborative art-science project with a stranger... using the supplies pictured below (what would you make?)? FUNN!
And each and every member of the organizing committee for Art Meets Science are just loveliness incarnate... thank you lovelies!
