I am going to be sad to say goodbye to this city and this country. Oh you sensible people who start floor numbering from zero.
Here are some offerings from the kitchen of the Department of Operations Research at ELTE.
That's a Mother of Millions, yes it is.

It is great to be in a country (continent, really) where one can have a perfectly civilized picnic, legally. And then after that you can go soak in a really really big bathtub (or thirty) for hours until your whole body is like a prune.

Finally a day to wander around and take in the sights, sounds and tastes of Budapest. From museums to fonts to shitty little weirdnesses, there are so many lovely details....

FRIDAY: Friday.

Foreign country running is pretty awesome. This morning we ran in a nearby park, which was big and cool and green. The humidity and recent rain makes Budapest seem positively tropical compared to the dry and dusty terra cotta earth of Southern France.

P.S.

The after-talk feeling. It doesn't even matter if the talk went a little bit badly, it still feels great to have it over with. I am looking forward to the day when I won't be so nervous, but already it is getting better.

TUESDAY: Maps are great. I have been told this is one of those personality-type type questions (do you like maps?). Well, I definitely do.

Fruit soup! This basically blew my mind with yumminess.

Also, as Patrick pointed out, it isn't so bad to not understand the language when you are prone to doing embarrassing things like not weighing your produce, or maybe weighing it when you aren't supposed to. Then when you get yelled at, you just can't care too much.

SUNDAY: Getting there. There being a somewhat bizarre guesthouse in Budapest, which will be rendered in photos shortly. In the meantime, just imagine graffitied castles, efficient retro transit, big german-style pillows, toilets that actually have seats, a language that sounds like water dripping, and a big bowl of bean goulash at the end of a long day of travel.

SATURDAY:
Today we had perhaps the worst meal that we have eaten on the course of this trip (and there have actually, surprisingly, been several bad ones). The table was in a garbage pile, it was covered in tree gunk, a fish trailer drove into the table, we were nearly hosed down with a fire hose and the food was bad. But it gave me a renewed appreciation for people who will smile and know how to find the best in these otherwise unhappy situations.

loveliness 204

Oh, I'm so behind on loveliness, and I seem to be having picture uploading problems here in Hungary, so that will have to wait.
FRIDAY: Went to Arles and Nîmes in search of the trace (of the net-fighting gladiator). It was found.

Today we were finally able to drag ourselves out of bed before the sun was too high in the sky, and we went for a poking-around kind of hike up Mont. St. Victoire. We were rewarded there with amazing views, and tiny scrubby little lovelinesses like these...
That is black moss, by the way, and next to it is wild rosemary (yes, wild!).

Later we survived a boat tour on the wild Mediterranean... which was spectacular if blindingly hot and exposed (and I emphasize the word survived here, as it didn't always seem obvious that we would!).
Still later we shocked the French with our snow-white Canadian skin on the beach, and swam in the ocean... so salty, sandy and magnificent.

Being on vacation makes me feel like I'm cheating on loveliness (it being too easy).

But this is loveliness 200! Hooray for easy lovelinesses....

Today I was so overwhelmed by newness that I took no photos. But wandering around Aix I was delighted to chance on the pizza place that I have such fond memories of from my last trip here, oh fifteen years ago. We had other lunch plans, but before I leave I definitely need to see if it still tastes as good as I remember.

loveliness 197

In some ways this day (Friday) is indistinguishable from Thursday, but after thirty-three hours of being awake, I ended up on a patio in Provence, drinking this:
By the way, that square thing at the bottom is a half-full bottle of wine in a bag of ice.

loveliness 196

Thursday: Rushing around to finish everything off, one thing I didn't get to was loveliness 196. But it was already in my mind, so I'm sticking with it.

Loveliness 196 is one that is actually itself a 365 day loveliness, and it is Roxy. She enriches, softens and loudens my day everyday. I love her and her loveliness, and I miss her when I'm gone. Sniff....

I just caught a fleeting glance at the International Space Station, making a speedy trip across the gorgeously clear night sky. It is amazing to think about all that science, floating out there.

In related space news, today Bob Thirsk received an honourary degree from the University of Calgary... in space. Wows. But what is even MORE awesome is how the UofC robes float around in zero g like a cape. I love this, and the fact that he came (to space) so prepared.

I accidentally bought some rose-coloured glasses. I didn't really realize it, until the clouds appeared more fluffy and magnificent than ever before!
Everything IS more beautiful this way.

Fresh cool breezes through an open window while sleeping. One of the best (if rare) parts of summer.

I'm going to steal one from yesterday:
Getting a ride home from dance with two generous, hilarious and wonderful women (one with incredible cabriole (<-- funny!) technique). Thank you!

loveliness 189

I heard an old friend's voice on the radio very early this (Thursday) morning, and later connected with her over e-mail. It is funny to think back to previous times (dancer legs in front of the Arc de Triomphe!!!) and it is lovely to find out what has happened in the time since.
This picture just cracks me up. I'm on the far right.

Getting stuff done on the artfront: submitted two proposals for the ambi-valent object exhibition.... very exciting!
That and Saskatoon berry apple crisp: mmm.
