Surprise Voronoi diagrams!

Here they are in our arteries. OK, in models of our arteries.

Nothing quite like the smell of onions cooking. Onions and squash, in da oven. The smells are up here though. In fact there is this nice place halfway up the stairs of our house where smells collect and concentrate. I'm serious. We call it the smell zone. And it is only really ever occupied in transition... going up or going down, through a micro-climate of smells! Better go check on that stuff, so... through the smell zone I go.

SUNDAY:
Last night we had an opportunity to present our fire piece ("Composition, Equation, Combustion," coming soon to a youtube near you) to an audience of nerds in the wicked basement of the Interaccess electronic media arts centre. Imagine fluorescent lighting, lockers full of nerd equipment, plugs dangling from the ceiling, space heaters (doing very little, unfortunately) and a beer fridge full of... beer.

I know I've said this kind of thing before, but it is nice every time it happens: it is great to meet interested people! Not just people who are interested in what we did, but people who are doing amazingly interesting things! I feel lucky to have been invited.

Surprise ART! Or perhaps it should really be ART surprise!
This snuck up on me this morning, on a crappy Dufferin convenience store that I pass all the time. Some art!

I hope you can read these, they are sort of interesting.

It's one of those days when colours seem more so. I didn't press *enhance* on any of these!

Well, I really don't like power outages. But the good part about them is that they end, and then you appreciate all the normal things, like having enough light to wash lettuce, and not needing to light the gas stove by the scary method etc. But power outages are also made more enjoyable by sweeties with warm sweaters (for lending), and by lighting lots of candles, and making soup anyway dammit.

HOLY CRAP 300? Really? Only sixty five more of these guys.
Well, this one is ok. I'm not sure it is really deserving of the "300" label, but it is what is happening today. (SO FAR! So much day lies ahead -- and in it, the potential for loveliness (which is in itself, a loveliness)).

But check this out, from my e-mail this morning:

This is a paper written by someone else!!!!!! !! !     !         !!!
I'm not supposed to brag about this probably, but I'm excited! What can I say? There is my first theorem!

I like it when I find out that I'm not the only one who has a blog. Check out this communal blog of a communal house, which has some very cute photos of food and family and bikes.

This photo from their blog. Yummy looking food yes?
The bounty of the dumpster. I don't think this is lovely actually. There is something wrong when this beautiful food is going to waste (or was going to waste before the beehive residents salvaged it).

A package in the mail, containing F.Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night, and this marvelous note:

One of my recent pleasures is that we have started getting the Good Food Box again. It is a gorgeous thing, unpacking that box of organic deliciousness, never knowing what will be in it from week to week. The only problem is that we sometimes end up with a build-up of a certain thing (onions and potatoes usually). Recently we have had a glut of squash. What to do with squash? Soup, I say. I need more soup in my life, I thought.

So I set out to the bookstore yesterday with this in my mind: a vegetarian soup cookbook that maybe has one chapter on breads and quickbreads to go with soups. A tall order, right? Well, yes it was, which is why I was halfway out the door (ok, to the cash) with a consolation non-soup vegetarian cookbook in hand when I spotted this: "Love Soup" by Anna Thomas. Doesn't look like much, but oh my! I can't wait to make each and every soup in here (and there are over 100). Plus, not only does it have a chapter on breads and quickbreads as I wanted (featuring such enticements as "multigrain scones with fennel and orange"), but it also has a chapter called "hummus and company", a chapter on salads (for summer and winter), and a short chapter called "a few easy sweets."

But this is saying nothing of the soups! Organized by season it has not one squash soup recipe, but rather a whole chapter ("winter squash soups"). Plus seven different recipes for vegetarian broth (hard to find in good quality), several soups made from Nettles (Nettle soup <-- new type of net!!!), and even some cold soups like that fruit soup amazingness we had in hungary this summer.

OH I am so thrilled! Yesterday I made the red lentil and squash soup, which was awesome if I may say so myself. The only problem with it is that it made such a large quantity of deliciousness that even after a serious meal last night, plus a whole giant thermos sent to Waterloo with the sick-as-a-dog Paddy, there is still several meals worth in the fridge. This wouldn't be a problem, except that I want to make more soup! I have a lot of soups to try! I guess you will all have to come over for soup, and often!

Lovelinesses, now wider!
I'm still working on this problem (I thought a pixel was a pixel was a pixel. You too? Well, NO!), but basically I am happy with the difference uploading via flickr makes. Colours are lovelier!

SATURDAY:

"Make a program to draw my graphs" got checked off my TO-DO list today. Well, more or less. It could be a lot better, but it will do for now.

FRIDAY:
And the show comes down. De-installation wasn't quite as labour intensive as installation, but still a lot of work. Here are some photos of the thing before we rolled it all up.

THURSDAY:
I think I have talked about the weird tube connector thingie at Spadina station in the past, and all of its opportunities for surrealism. Today I had the song from the busker who was there this morning stuck in my head all day. Steel pan drums -- not a bad soundtrack for Thursday. Shit, it looks like it might also be the soundtrack for Friday, too.

When "Buddhist Friendly" is a descriptor of menu items (at Fressen).

Putting that hyperlink reminded me of this funny thing: apparently the creator of the internet regrets the double-slash.

On the other hand, sometimes Thanksgiving is just about awesome leftovers.

loveliness 289

SUNDAY:
I don't want to be all sappy and whatnot, but I really love Thanksgiving. It actually seems like one of the few holidays that can actually be celebrated for what it is for without either religious messages or the smack of consumerism. Just the amazing harvest-time foods, the gathering together of your loved people and the crisp Fall air (and chestnuts in the pockets!). I love all of this shit! And there is so much more to be thankful for -- for example, lovelinesses 1 - 288. Although upon reflection, these are almost just superficial nothingnesses, because usually it is scary to share anything here that isn't basically trivial (indifference is cool, right?). Well, not much is changing this time in terms of details, but let me just say that I am not indifferent (or at least I'm working on it), and I am in fact one very lucky lady. So.... "thanks" to friends and family and lovers and colleagues and cats and the earth and the wind and for music and seeing and legs that move me and for being warm and having resources and abundance and science! and oh freedom and other important things plus the price chopper and the dufferin bus and quiet moments and sharp pencils and for mornings and for whispering and making choices and softness and breathing and loving and feeling and doing.

This one is actually Patrick's loveliness: Tiger Balm, he smells says.

FRIDAY:
What a week! Witness: 4 lovelinesses in a row.
Today I breathed a deep sigh of relief. Even though the to-do list looms large, today was a day to relax and wander. How wonderful to stroll around with a big handsome umbrella, some warm boots and great company. I love the rain when I'm equipped and cozy.

loveliness 286

THURSDAY:
And everything comes together! So many different worlds collided tonight -- art, math, family, semi-family, friends, collaborators, colleagues, supervisor, and of course lots of new faces. I'm really happy with how everything turned out, and also happy it is over. This was easily the most exciting thing that I have been a part of at York. Documentation to follow....

WEDNESDAY:
Today I learned all about the Mennonites at the wicked (and interactive!) Mennonite Museum in St. Jacob's. Some highlights are here:

ha ha! This cracks me up:
This guy was actually named "Menno":
This next one is from the Schnieder House, which was a traditional Mennonite house, and is now a museum. They had a de-liceing room. Today they were making cookies though, not de-liceing.

Today in Dufferin Grove, this basically made my morning:
What happened here? It is funny and sad at the same time.

loveliness 282

SUNDAY:
Guys! It is chestnut time of year! This is one of my favourite times... I can't really resist picking up these amazingly smooth objects, so waxy and fresh and dense. My jacket and bag pockets are filling up, seriously. P suggested I take pictures of them instead of collecting them all (he was thinking of the squirrels, surely), but this misses the point. Hold them in your pockets and you will know what I mean.

SATURDAY:
It is nice to show out-of-town guests around the city, and in doing so see it yourself with fresh eyes.
Dear city,
I love you.
